Bumpers

Who makes reasonably priced off-road bumpers? I need some tow points before I go off-road, and a winch is probably in the future. Anything Scout is the only place I've found. Does everyone just fab their own?

Up next: Seats, body work, center console, skid plates, bumpers, better gauges, lockers(?).

Re: Bumpers

There are several members of our Arizona Scout club that do custom bumpers at reasonable prices. See their ads in the clasified section of the forum at: www.sonoradesertscouts.com

At our last meeting, heavy D-rings for attachment to bumpers were given away in the member drawing.

Re: Bumpers

Just make your own. It's not hard and it's a lot cheaper than buying one. Get some 2x4x.188 rect tube, cut a taper at the ends, and mount them up.

I did see these on ebay yesterday:

*Disclaimer* I have not done business with either of the above merchants.

Re: Bumpers

A lot of folks use j**p bumpers as well. They can be reasonable new. And down right cost effective from the junkyard.

I suppose. I did this for a rear bumper on my K5. I really have no idea what it takes to make a winch bumper though. Just a flat mounting plate on top? Also, how do you properly mount a rear bumper to a Scout 80? The factory mounting method seems too flimsy for something to tow from. It's just screwed straight in from the back if I remember right.

Anyone have pics of a winch bumper on an 80? There is so much space behind the grill in front of the radiator, it would be tempting to use that somehow to set everything back further.

Any idea how much modification it takes to get them to mount up?

Re: Bumpers

I have a scout that proves how weak the factory mounting is. Looks like they hooked to something and pulled the whole bumper off, along with all the wiring to the tail lights as well. It still has the factory front and rear flimsy ones. With some of my other rigs I put on bumpers with receiver hitches to swap the winch to front and back. I just used square tube welded to the frame and the bumper. There is a piece of channel that has to be cut out for the square tube to reach the frame. In other words two squares cut in the end piece. Then the square tube goes through them to tie into the frame. No bolts used.
