Weekend Fun

Friday evening Lauren & I went for a little drive in my yellow 800. We found a nice spring-fed waterhole in the creek near her house. There were tracks skirting around the waterhole, and I walked it to make sure it wasn't too muddy. It seemed fine, so I started around it, only to break through the top crust, slide sideways about 5 feet towards the water, and bury the Scout up to the frame in wet sand! I guess those tracks were from last summer when it was WAY drier. I shoveled for a while, but it was obvious that it would be a few hours before we got out, and it was getting dark. We gave up for the night and walked the four miles back to Lauren's. We had other plans for Saturday, so didn't go back to get the Scout until Sunday. We went back in Lauren's Terra and brought lots of lumber for jack bases and ramps. I hooked up the winch to a Saltcedar in back of the Scout and alternately jacked up each corner with the Hi-Lift in order to get a length of 2X6 under each wheel to make a ramp. It got worse before it got better, as the front of the Scout kept sliding towards the water as I got the back end pulled away from the muddy part. The front wheels were in the water before it was all over. After 3 hours of this the Scout was back on dry ground. What fun! Moral of the story: NEVER go anywhere without water, flashlights, warm clothes for everyone, and good walking shoes. I did have all these things, and it would have been a real bummer without any one of them.

Glad you got her out! make sure you inspect that front hub for water. I had a similar experience this weekend except I got my p/u stuck and had to pull it out with the scout! I notice there's not much to tie a winch cable to where you are.

Oh my! Well that was an adventure. Poor thing almost buried itself - now she gets a nice bath and some TLC.

I am amazed George at how nice that scout still looks - you have kept it in that condition for a number of years as far as I can tell.

10-4 on the hubs. Amazingly enough, they were OK. Yeah, we were lucky finding a big enough tree to tie to. I thought the Scout was going to win over the Saltcedar, but it held on (barely). Saltcedar is an invasive tree here, so I was also doing a public service!

Thanks, Jens. I try my best to thrash it, but it still looks good. Actually, all old Scouts look good, don't they?

Re: Weekend Fun

Rule #1 don't wheel alone.

If you ignore rule #1... Be prepared for self extraction, extra parts, water/food, etc.

Glad you got out OK.

I went for a quick spin in the back 40 to dump some fill dirt, and decided to explore a little further...ooooppps. I got suck... bad. By myself. A blown axle shaft and about 2 hours later, I made it out. The closest winch point was 150' away. Luckily I had a shovel and enough straps to extend the winch line and eventually pulled myself out. Thank goodness for the Warn winch.

The wife was pissed I was only supposed to be gone 20 minutes, was gone 2.5 hours and come home with a broken truck.

Tell her it could have been worse--she could have been with you!

Re: Weekend Fun

Glad things turned out all right for you. Not much fun to spend the night in the desert unprepared.

Ps.
Yesterday I bought a 72 SII. I can't find a single spot of rust yet.
I'm thinking of selling the 800B and build the SII instead.

Which do you prefer? Early SII or 800B? I'm back and forth on it, and I don't really need/want both.

I'd rather have the 800B, but it's my favorite scout, so I'm prejudiced that way. Also, I have several scout IIs, but no 800s, which gives me some sort of 800 envy. If you were closer, I'd just show up and talk trade.

Re: Weekend Fun

It's cool to see a good looking 80/800 that gets used hard and taken care of. Really, yours is one of the ones that keeps me inspired to keep moving forward. It's also nice that you've opted to keep and get the most out of the 1904 instead of just chuking it for something shiny.
