SOA-The build up continues! Part 2

Ok,
After getting the hydro boost installed I decided I really need to get the SOA done before I put this thing on the ship to Italy. I really don't know what my facilities will be there.

So I will post up my progress of the SOA as I go along this week end.

I will try to list all that I use just as I did in the hydroboost thread.

First this is how it looked when I started. I just completed the final coat of red to make it all the same shade. I still need to 600 and shoot the clear...someday!

Other build ups.
Rear Disc Jeep D300 OBA OBW Interior PS pump reseal Hydro boost Mirrors Headliner

I backed the scout in and stuck the back up on stands. Unbolted the rear and the drive shaft.
Removed the brakes (for a later project ) and the emergency cables.
You may be able to just unbolt the ubolts and the springs then just hold the axle up in place and pull the springs out.
It would be a lot less to unhook then pulling the rear completely out.
I have other things in mind so I needed to pull mine completely out.

Now I just rolled the axle back under the springs. Set the new perches right over the top of the old ones..BTW I use 2" square tube cut to 6" long for my perches. I feel they give a little better support to resist spring wrap. I made 2 of mine and while at RMIHR discovered the John at BCB makes them the same as I do so I bought 2 from him. Someone still needs to make the correct one for the front passengers side!!! Hint John.

So I set my pinion angle at 10* so it would be pointing at the TC and I welded the perches in place.
I use one of the magnetic angle finders you can get at the home improvement stores.
This is after about 1 hr. The scout is back on the wheels to check the stance.
Hot rod!!

So now to the front!
I put it back on stands and unbolted the front diff.
I was fortunate enough to get hold of an empty 44 housing so Ian, the guy with the 4 cyl FI 80 could grind the perches down while I did the disassembly.

I should also mention that I set the body and the frame level when I set it up on stands. Used the same angle finder!!

An air gun, a claw hammer & a shade tree > yep, you're IH to the bone.

Got some pics of the rear spring mounts & shock mounts? Why 10 degrees? Is that the predetermined optimum angle & doesn't require a longer DL?

2am & you're posting pics (thanx ) but it's only 1am here & I'm on my way to bed real soon. NASCAR starts early tomorrow (Atlanta) & I still have an engine/trans/x-fer to put in tomorrow too.

BTW: You arcing or miging? Rod & amps? Thnx.

The time consuming part is all the grinding on the passengers side of the axle and the knuckles to get them to the point of showing a line all the way around so they can be turned.

I like to grind the Pass side down till it is round then take one of the standard perches (cause no one is making one for this) and grind out a 1/2" so it will set around the cast housing and will be the same hieght as the drivers side.
For the yokes, I grind them parallel to the axle so you don't grind into the tube. You have to grind into the yoke until a rust line or crack appears all the way around.
I spray the inside and outside with PB Blaster or WD-40 to help reveal the crack.

You also need to grind the areas where the U-bolts run so they will set against the housing all the way around.

Here it is with the new housing up in place.
I put the U-bolts on and just run them down till they touch.
Then I set the pinion angle.
I found the the pinion and the original perches are at the same angle.
I set the pinion at 13*. To be pointing right at the TC I would need to be 15* but since the front will compress and move up, I left 2* out.
Once the pinion is set I tighten the u-bolts down till they are tight.

Next comes the fun part. You get to beat your scout with a hammer.
I use about a 5 pond maul and the floor jack.
I place the jack under the steering arm and apply pressure. Then I hit the front of the yoke to drive it around to the desired angle.

In my case the knuckle was at -17* and I tuned them to a +5*.

I only use the jack to get them moving.

I'll take a few more pics tomorrow to help fill in the gaps.

10* is what it came out to be in the rear. I held the DL in the yoke and measured the angle then set the pinion to that angle.

For the front I reduced it by 2* due to the short DL. What I did on the yellow scout behind it was to reduce the wheel base by 2". I put 3 holes in the perches so I can centered, 1" forward or back. On the yellow 76 I have ran the stock front driveshaft since I built it over 2 yrs ago by moving the front axle back 1". It also helps the tire to clear the front lip of the fender.
For the rear I moved it up 1" but it was still too short to wheel hard. So I put it back and converted a bronco CV shaft. But That's for later!!

I'm miging. It's a 155.

I know the race is on. Bill Elliott is running this weekend!
He has stanley tools as a sponsor for next year on a limited schedule tho.

Here's a hint...
I took this week off work just to get the scout done...well as done as I can!

I would not expect anyone to drive that far to help out.
Thanks tho.

If I'm not in the garage I'm out getting parts!!!!!

Day 2 is almost over and I feel like I got nothing done.

It started out pretty good.
I pulled the front housing out and completed all the welds on the mounts and the knuckles then I cleaned the housing.
It was amazing how much dirt finds it's way into the front tubes.
I used a piece of exhaust pipe about 4' long to scrape out the tubes before I washed them with some super clean.

The exhaust pipe also works good for removing the inner seals that needed replacing.

So on to that!!!

Once the seals were removed and the housing clean I set the new seals in place.

Then I pulled out my fancy home made seal driver an put it in place.
It's very simple, just threaded rod and some nuts and large washers. But it works. You just have to make sure the seals are started straight as you drive them in.

Now the rest of the day was spent putting new clutches in the trac lock for the rear diff. That was a real joy!!! NOT.

Then it was on to the front diff.
I had to tear down the old rear diff from the yellow scout and pull the carrier because it had the lockright in it. It also had 3.54's so I had to do a gear change to my other set of 3.73's.
And that's were I am tonight.
The pinion and ring gear swap has been a pain to get set up.
Don't know why this one has been so difficult to get the pinion depth and backlash right but I'm almost there. Once it's done I can get everything bolted back together so I can get the steering done.

So in case you haven't caught on... I am putting my lock right locker in the front diff and the trac loc posi in the rear diff with 3.73's.
The plan is to run 33's but I'm toying with the idea of 35's.
By adjusting the placement of the axles I was able to clear 35's on the yellow scout. The only place the rubbed was the top of the inner fender on the rear tires at stuff. And the front springs due to the small offset 16" dodge rims.

Kevin, I still owe you some more pics!

Thanks goes to Ian for all his help this weekend.

No rush on my part Bill, haste makes waste. When the opportunity arises for ya. In the meantime what you have posted is looking good & very helpful.

On a side note > your seal installer is very similar to my cam bearing installer. Intead of pushing them in from one side tho' (which I can imagine would also work too but I never thought of it) I use the all thread to sandwich/pull them in. Your way might be easier tho'. ;)

OT> Well Bill Elliott didn't do too well today, but Mark Martin kicked butt. Shame a late caution & long pit stop kept him from winning, but he led the most laps & 2nd place is only 5pts less than 1st. Congrats to Jimmie Johnson on a 3rd straight win (how did he do that?) & to Hendricks MotorSports. :)

I got the freeze plugs in the engine & the engine/trans/x-fer in today .... finally. Rain held me off the past 2 weeks. Wish my garage had a higher ceiling so I could do it inside. Oh well, one of the misfortunes of having a tall 4x4. Sure was a lot easier having the front clip off tho'.

Tomorrow is another day ....
