Scout II headliner

Materials:
1/8” hard board from Lowes $7.50
1 can of 3M super 77 spray adhesive. (best to use) $5
3 yds of headliner material from Hancock fabrics $26
Plastic panel buttons from Autozone $2
Total $40.50

The roof inside measures 81 ½ X 54. I cut the hard board to 84 X 48. This allows the
front and back of the board to stick into the slot at the top of the roof to help hold it up.
I put 1 ½ inch inside the front and 1 inch in the rear.
Locations for holes are measured from the front of the board and from the center line,
CL. Center locations are on CL. The outer locations are 10” on each side of CL.
The bottom box is for the light if you install one.

Other build ups.

Here is the hard board with the holes drilled. I used a 3/8 bit to give a little room for the headliner material.

I didn't get a pic of the gluing the material to the board...I had my hands full.
Lay the material out on the board then lift one end and spray both the foam and the board with a light coat of 77. Give it about 30 seconds then set it place. It better be straight!!!!

Then roll the rest up straight towards the piece you just glued.

Then spray a short section at a time and start to unroll as you spray.
Only spray about a foot or so each time and spray both surfaces. Let air for about 15-30 seconds before sticking together.
Just work your way to the end.

Here it is covered and installed in the newly insulated roof.
The front and back get tucked into the slots in the top.

If you don't have the roll bar in or it is just the stock single hoop it should not be a problem.
Watch the overspray from the adhesive. Use blankets to cover anything you don't want it one.

I would build the board and glue the headliner material to it before I stuck it up in.
No different than me laying on my back with the top on saw horses.
Don't try to glue the headliner to the board while it's in the scout!

Looks good Bill. I did something similar to build carpet panels. Always nice to see someone putting some effort, and giving some ideas on finishing touches.

inspiration

kept thinking about bill's fix on the headliner...

kept looking at the blight which was inside my top...

kept wanting to do something, anything had to be better than what i was looking at...

and so...

started by tearing out old plywood and insulation

started by cleaning top with broom

stared by going to home depot and buying couple of sheets of white plastic siding

and did...

measure them up (exactly to bill's recommendation)

screw them up

enjoy the sight to behold

THANK YOU BILL FOR THE INSPIRATION.

I think it's the same place, and the receipt has a website. http://www.hancockfabrics.com

Obviously, I bought mine at the Great Falls, MT store... not somewhere in TX.

..I had to travel 90 miles to get to a Hancock store...

Re: Scout II headliner

Just before my Glacier trip I got around to making a headliner, but didn't install the side panels before we left, and used Krylon spray glue, not 3M.. things didn't work out 100%.. so I'm re-doing it and I pulled the side panels from a parts rig and need to clean them up for install as well.

I did act on the "embossing" thought/tip you had, Bill, after you did the door panels.

The 6/8" "IH" copies I made didn't turn out as well as the 12/16" IH (I say 6/8 because the "H" is 6" high, but 8" with the dot over the I). I used a 6/8" IH logo sign I had lying around to make a template.

I first used poster board, but it didn't show up too well. This time I used cardboard.

The smaller IHs don't allow enough room for the headliner to really stick in the gaps of the man-on-tractor, while the double-size one is clearly much better at it.

Not sure if you can tell, but to either side of the big IH is a pair of "poster-board" IHs.

I'll fip the headliner over and glue the excess material around to the back and let it dry tonight or tomorrow, while I'm working on getting my front disc swap done.

Thanks for the tips, Bill.

-Tom

Re: Scout II headliner

That looks good!
Everytime I look at my headliner i want to redo it!!
The 3M glue really holds good.
I spray both pieces and let set before applying.
If you spray too much, when you press down to form it to the contours it will sometimes stay compressed where you press.

I also thought of using a layer of batting on the back and just sewing in the IH in the middle.
I think it would give a clear defined line then!
Remove all batting outside the stitch.
The foam backing may be enough without even using the batting.

Could even use a contrasting color of thread to make it stand out!

Re: Scout II headliner

So there I was....

The back of the Super 77 can says wait at least 30 sec. for it to set up. I didn't wait the 30 sec. (because I didn't read the can) and my project failed. I was using an "outdoor" fabric from wal-mart. It's either vinyl or rubber. I had a foam backing that held to the hard board fine but the rubber no sticky to the foam.

I went to home depot and was told about Super 80. That's right 80. Guy said "you used the 77? What a rookie mistake. Should have went with the 80" It's for vinyl and rubber. It requires 4 minutes to set up. Reminds me of that glue I used as a kid to patch bike tires. Right now I have a test sample setting up. So far it looks real good.

Also the dimensions for the holes we're off for my top. The forward most CL hole was 15" for me not 14".

If someone would like to post pics email me.
