Interior Part II

OK, Since the Navy delayed me leaving by a couple weeks (thank God) I am trying to wrap some things up.
So in this installment:
I installed the front half of my ACC carpet set.
Cleaned up a few details on the dash and steering wheel.
Sprayed the shift console.
Modified my 79 door to accept the 75 arm rest.
Covered my door panels to match the headliner.

So to start off, here is the front carpet installed.
In the areas that did not have the synthetic jute on the back of the carpet, I added some of the silver insulation like I used in the headliner.
I am very pleased, Again, with the quality of the ACC carpets. I purchased mine through IIRC www.auto-interiors.com

Now that the carpet is in I need to put the shift console back in.
I decided to leave the big panel under the carpet and just have the shift console on top.

BTW, the center console is an early jp CJ 8" wide Smitty built.
Much cheaper than the Tuffy.

I also added some "bling" polished SS trim on the console. It's like a mirror.
Got them a long time ago from a guy for helping him out with his TBI. I'll look him up and send a pic!!

Other build ups.

Re: Interior Part II

OK, on to the doors.
First, if you remember I replaced the passenger door with a 79 door I got from HarleyKeith.
Well if you didn't know it the doors changed just a little.
The hole for the outside door lock is smaller, had to use a diegrinder to open it up a little.
The arm rest mounts are flat and spaced different.
And the door panel fasteners are flat instead of cupped.

So I had to remove the original 79 arm rest mounts which was easy. Just drill the spot welds out.

Now compared to the 75 mounts.

So I took them to the vice and rebent them!

Then I just drilled a couple holes and riveted them back in the right place!!

Re: Interior Part II

On to the door panels.
The originals are metal panels that had soft door panels on top of them. They are simple hard board that is covered with vinyl.
I decided instead of going back with this same style that I would just cover the metal panel with the same headliner material I used earlier.

I start out by cutting the general size of the panel.
I leave a couple inches all around.
Then I spray about 1/3 of the panel with the 3M SUPER 77 It's the only contact spray to use.

Then I spray the same 1/3 of the material.

I then position the material over the panel. I hold it up by the ends basically folding in the middle, and set it down over the panel. I just lay it down from the center out making sure it is centered. You won't be able to move it once it sticks.
Some thing to keep in mind is you can not put a lot of pressure on the foam while the glue is wet. It will cause the foam to bunch up and make dimples in the fabric. so keep your fingers off of the new covering till it dries.
I use a simple scraper or spreader to smooth it out.

Once the first 1/3 is in place and smooth, I spray the remaining 2/3's.

Then again smooth it out and gentle with your finger work it into any patterns or corners.

Then carefully flip it over.
Again, Don't use your fingertips or set it down on just a corner of the new covering.
Lay it face down and trim the material all the way around leaving about 1/2 to 1".

Once it is all trimmed, I spray all the edges on the back side.
Then carefully work the material from the front face to the back.
I use my whole hane to just slowly smooth it from from to back a little at a time till it is rolled over the back edge.
The corners need to be worked gently. Never pull or pinch this material. If you trimmed it close you will find you can also just slowly work it from the face to the back edge with your hands. It should not have any wrinkles or folds on the face. It will have a couple small pleats on the back inside where it is not visible.
Now for the holes. I use a new razor blade and cut from the back. I don't cut all the way to the edge. I just make an X for squares and an * for circles.
The I work the material from the front through the hole and onto the back.
Make sure you sprayed a little 77 on each so they stick!

Re: Interior Part II

Notice how even the small little recesses in the panel are visible!!
Imagine if you took your favorite symbol or letters and cut them out of some of the material, then glude them down before you put the the covering on it.
It would be a nice little 3D design in the covering.
How about a nice IH
Now imagine that about 24" and in your headliner!!!! : thumbsup

Oh well maybe next time!

So they are now covered and ready to install.
I could have went with just screws but what the heck, I'll add some finishing washers.
This one was while the sun was still up and you can see the carpet and the steering wheel.

Here is my first option for the finished product.

Here is option 2.
The carpet kit comes with the small panels for the bottom of the door.
Tell me what ya think.
Which way should I go????

And that's all......................for tonight.

Re: Interior Part II

Lookin good!!

I would keep the lower door panel. I know my wife is bad about holding the door open by using her foot in the lower corner when getting stuff situated before getting out.

I feel the carpet is a lot tougher than the headliner material also. You could remove the lower strip and give it a shampooing if needed.

Got the a/c installed yet? Compressor? Welder?

Keep us posted!!

I'm thinking I could leave it on for now then change it out for a smaller strip of polished aluminum or SS later. I think it would look better and wear better!!

OBW, AC...Funny you should ask!!

Preview of both mounted! I had to wash the engine after looking at this pic!

Re: Interior Part II

Bill it looks really good. I would keep the carpeted bottoms on the door panel, I think that it just finishes it up real nice.

Re: Interior Part II

I hate it also, ever work on one after it has been above the rockers in a mud hole. Both kids wheel there 4x's . Spent the last two days putting new rod bearings in a 4 runner, only 3 hours work to get to the pan with dirt everywhere even after pressure washing it. Something to be said for crawling slick rock.

Re: Interior Part II

After my last little outing in the mud, it took me $10 in quarters at the car wash and I still have the crap fall into my face everytime I crawl under it!!

I really need another pressure washer!!!

Don't know why I picked it.
Just figured I want to try to sound deadon and insulate as best I could.
And because I knew if I used the same material it would match. : doh :
It has to be a no brainer for me !!
Figure I can always strip it off later if I don't like it.
Maybe drive up to Enzo's house and get some Italian leather for it!!! : kewl :

I'm thinking I will change out the carpet panels for some polished aluminum or SS panels later!
More durable and more bling!

Re: Interior Part II

I like it better W/O the carpet, but I agree that you should keep it due to the foot door prop comment. I find this same problem.

I said it before, and I will say it again - I am happy to see you posting this stuff. Great work!

Well lets see.......
Hood-used, front fenders-used (harley keith), passenger door-used (harley keith), passenger qtr pnl and end cap-new but cheaper blems from SSS, roof-used.

Keep in mind that none of it was replaced due to rust.
It was all due to dents.
The scout was in a hail storm with softball size hail. Even the windshield got it.
You can see the dents all over the hood and fenders.

And I would be in jail for tickets.
Just another reason to like IH!!
They are not the fastest but they get you there!
It's harder to bark em now with the extra box filled and the 33 gal tank full!!!
