This is a closeup of my 1960 B series fire truck. It came with a 304, which I temporarily replaced with a rebuilt 304 from one of my Scout IIs while I am overhauling the original. I drove this truck from Tulare to Prescott Valley, AZ in 2007 and then to Ohio in May, 2008, then to Nebraska in October 2008. The next scheduled trip is to the tri-cities area of Washington, probably in the spring. This truck was judged best non-restored medium at the NATS 2008. The pump is no longer functional, but everything else works, including the PTO that drives it. Transmission is 5 speed direct, 2 speed rear end. Stock tires are 8.25x20 tubed, bias ply, and the next investment will be to switch to non-split rims and radial tires for a safer ride and a less bumpy warmup drive. Top speed at 3900 rpms is 70 mph, cruising speed is 50-65. Wind noise in cab at 65 is 96 dbA and requires the use of ear plugs to meet OSHA standards. Wind noise at 50 mph is only 76 db and ear plugs are not required. Fuel economy is 7.8 mpg at either speed on the highway with the 304. |
