  • 266 vs 304

I got my service manual today and was quite pleased except for one thing, it doesn't mention the 266 v8. I looked on BB FAQ and read the thread on this forum about interchangability. What else do I need to know about 266 specs/repair that I can't transfer from the 304 section of the service manual? Where do I find this information?

I've got the same issue. No 266 enginge section in the manual. I suppose I ought to call Binder Books. Maybe they can shed some light on the subject. I think the 266 is under-rated.

I have no experience with the 266 but from the conversations I have been involved with the problem is no parts availability.
      No pistons rings etc.
      Hope you find more information.

When my 304 died in the driveway, I put in a 266 of unknown year in my 70 800A with BW-11 auto.

It was a direct bolt in and I used any 304 part I needed for the swap (dist, carb, exhaust manifolds).

My books show different timing for different years on the 266s, but I have ended up at 5 BTDC.

When the 304 went, I had my choice of a 266 and a 345, and I went 266 because I would obviously get much better milage! Oh well, so much for that idea.

I would go for cubes next time.
