    not TB spacer, but pod spacer? I can't come up with a reason for doing this.

    It helps to unshield the air flow into the throttle body. The injectors block some of the air from having a direct flow in to the manifold. By raising the injectors it gives a more direct path. If you go too far than the nice conical spray pattern of the fuel ends up on the wall of the throttle body and counters all the good effects you gained by raising the injectors.
