  • Ford ignition upgrades

    http://www.geocities.com/swbjeep/ignition.html

This is a writeup on what is known on the orc swbbbs as the "TR (or TeamRush) upgrade" using the large style ford cap and rotor and the very hot TFI coil.

This is the ignition that I run on the 258 in the J10, and in doing this swap I discovered 2 things.

One, the claims of the large cap decreasing crossfire are 100% true. I did the swap in two stages, first the cap, rotor, and wires and the the TFi coil.

Two, The TFI coil is the whole point of swapping to the big cap. The spark energy generated by this coil is an enormous improvement over the old can style coils everyone used for 20 years. It throws significantly more volts than the HEI coils, even the aftermarket big$$ coils, I believe. If you guys are going to use the ford ign., USE THE TFI COIL.

BUT- some people have found that their wiring will slag these coils, one after another. I believe that you need a resistor on the feed wire to the coil, but I'm not positive. I could find out if there is interest in this.

    An aside:

the acronym "HEI" is a Chevy term (tramemark?) and shouldn't be used to describe the Ford TFI system. (TFI stands for Thick Film Integrated--describing the coil technology.)

Not looking for a pat on the back or anything, just thought that you all should know that the tfi is worth the effort. I wanted to give something back, you know?

When I first started using BBS's and wanted to learn about a topic, i'd watch the discussions until I felt knowledgeable enough about it to ask an intelligent question. The 11 views/ no replies stood out to me because there's only been 5 or 6 posters to this board total. I get the impression that this is happening here. Or maybe not. The base of info for doing this sort of swap is thin, not just here but all over the web. that's inaccurate. The base is good, and the programming info is good, it's the middle steps that are missing. I hope my questioning is helping to fill that void.

I guess I'm feeling the need to justify my presence on your IH bbs. I know you guys are sensitive. I piped up on the binder bulletin once to help out a guy with his 258 powered scout, and a couple of guys took some potshots at me.

        Let me reload!!!!!!

No problem Brendan. Sometimes when we do something and then write it down we skip little things that are obvious to us but not the reader. Thats why I like pictures... But I hate my camera.

        Keep asking!!!

I'm reloading for some potshots since you opened the door.

Maybe so, but take a look at the support base for the full sizes vs. the IH community. You guys have it good. The best FSJ site gets updated like once every 8 months.

Brenden: I also used the T/R set up on my 78 J10 w/258 about 10 yrs ago. Best improvement I ever made to the old 258. I beleive like you that they are a bunch of guys just waiting to get their feet wet with this EFI stuff. I am rounding up the Duraspark stuff now to do my 345 in an 800. I am going the whole duraspark box and all for now. will prolly use the TFI coil tho. I wish many times I had not got rid of that old J10 they are harder to find now in any kind of shape.
